February 3 Au Sable River Fishing Report
February 3, 2012
I hear the groundhog says we’re gonna have 6 more weeks of winter. If it stays like this—great!
This is simply the mildest winter I can ever remember. I know the winter sports folks are howling, but the anglers taking advantage of all the new open water are having a great time.
This last week had folks in the shop everyday picking up last minute tidbits before hitting the stream. Fishermen are catching trout on everything from nymphs to streamers. Definitely take your streamer box and start with natural colors, but don’t get married to anything. I’ve heard of hot flies being everything from small and black to big and white. Some great fish are being caught.
I can’t give you a personal fishing report this week as I just haven’t been able to get out. Guess it doesn’t matter where you live, sometimes life just gets in the way.
A good friend of mine needed some help cutting up some dead ash trees on his property, so we dusted of the saw and got to work. The emerald ash borer has really hit the area below Mio.
The ten day forecast looks great and you can get to about any access, so if you’ve got the itch, scratch it.
Thanks,
Andy
By the way, all this not fishing is starting to drive me a little stir crazy. I'm getting jealous of everyone else catching fish while I have to work!
So I'm making an executive decision. We're going to have a winter fishing event On February 25th here on the Au Sable and sponsored by the shop. We'll do some fly tying, some fishing, some eating and drinking, and we'll have a contest with some top notch prizes. I've already started spreading the news by word-of-mouth and have anglers commiting.
Sometimes you just have to make time to fish. So take your gal toa great Valentines Day feast, build up a few points, and clear the calender for February 25th.
I'll write it all up and shoot out an e-mail when I come up with a cool name. See you then.
