So it Begins
June 10, 2010
Joe takes his sucker fishing seriously. He found this daytime, bronze beauty while fishing a Hex nymph in the pond. The big guy gave this trumpet trout a ride home on the stringer and released it into a stick of melted butter. Ate the lips like calamari. Said it was delicious.
I jest. I kid. But he really did catch this thing on a Hex nymph. Suckers crack me up. They define the term “rough fish”. And they love Hex. You’ll here them suck, suck, suck along logs, in eddies, and near reeds. And sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll see some guys posted up, super focused, and intent on catching what they think is a giant brown slurping mayflies. Not much you can do but wish them luck. They tend to get offended if you tell them they’ve been casting to a sucker for the last hour.
Lots going on here. We’re fishing the last of the brown drakes. There’s been good evening fishing to cahills (or some sort of size 14 stenonema), sulphurs, yellow stones, and the Iso’s are coming on strong. I saw more Iso’s last night at dusk than I’ve seen in a couple of years. I also saw a nice flight of Hex. They’re stuttering to a start in most traditional spots on the AuSable and should go well the next hot day. Watch the weather forecast.
I haven’t heard of the big mayflies on the South Branch or the Manistee . . . take your Iso’s, have great fishing, and stay a little later to watch for Hex.
I was out there last night. I’ll be out there tonight. I’ll be out there . . . I’ll be tired.
I’m gonna try to get you folks a picture of a trout . . . gotta take care of the clients.
Happy Hunting,
Andy

Nice one on the Hex. Thanks Tom. Good pic.
