September Happenings

September 2, 2010

Fishing looks to be just fine for the foreseeable future. The month change on the calendar has brought with it a fine, seasonable weather change. Expect to fish attractors to podded up, pre-spawn brook trout and run the fly along the logs for browns. There may also be some night fishing left and this new moon period is the time to chase ‘em. Look for rain and cool temps to enhance the fishing conditions on any of the local rivers. We’re still fishing dries like ant, beetles, and skunks, but the fall Iso is around and patterns matching that hatch will produce while fished blind in the runs and drops. The rain could also spur some action with BWO’s so take that box. If it rains, streamers could really produce—take ‘em with you. A big meal can be just the ticket. If for no other reason, fishing should be great simply because it’s September and you just can’t beat Fall in Northern Michigan along the AuSable and Manistee rivers. I’m excited.

The guides have been busy chasing trout with clients. Paul caught a pretty, little Holy Waters rainbow early this week with Alex and had a great time hunting brookies in the riffles.

Joe set a goal for himself early this year to catch a big pike on the fly. The big man stuck with it, pounding big flies he tied himself with his Scott A3 8ft six weight at weed banks on small local lakes. He was finally rewarded with this fine water wolf. Give a true fisherman a challenge and he’ll be haunted until he beats it. Nicely done.

Lots of cool stuff happening this month. Brook trout on the move. Browns should get the feed bag on to prepare for late fall spawning. The AuSable river clean-up is just over a week away. They always need volunteers. Check out the Anglers of the AuSable website http://www.ausableanglers.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=1 and Tom and the boys in the big water below Mio really need some folks . . . contact Tom through their site at    http://www.asbwpa.org/ .  Then, we have opening day of grouse season and shortly afterward the woodcock opener.   Finally, we at the Old AuSable are hosting the fly fishing film tour on Saturday September 18th. We’ll have a reception at the shop complete with snacks and refreshments then walk on over to the Rialto theater for additional refreshments, bluegrass music, and the fly fishing film. It’s gonna be a great time and I hope many of you can attend. We hope to make this an annual event.

Have a great holiday weekend and thank you for the support,
Andy
