Our Team

The pro-staff and guides at the Old Au Sable are true fly fishing professionals.

They all make their living doing what they love and it shows every day with their attention to customer service.

We invite you to experience the difference in the way we do business every day.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the difference working with someone with a true passion for what they do.

Andy Partlo

Co-Owner – Fly Fishing Operations Manager

Andy left a career path in academia some 15 years ago when Rusty Gates offered him a mentorship at Gates’ Au Sable Lodge in Grayling, MI. After a number of years managing and working closely with Rusty, Andy left for Montana and worked two seasons at Dan Bailey’s in Livingston, MT.

Back in 2008 he got the call from Jeff to join the ownership team to first acquire our landmark riverside property and then to become part of the operating company to put together the workings for a great fly shop.

With no hesitation he rolled up his sleeves and went to work. He’s in charge of all the fly shop operations including our guide service, the lodge and the schools and workshops. His depth of knowledge in everything fly fishing is nothing short of amazing.

He lives just a stone’s throw from the river with his wife Gloria and his new son Jackson and (at last count) 3 English Setters.

He spends his spare time fly fishing, bird hunting and being a great dad to Jacks.

Jeffrey Gardner

Co-Owner – General Manager

Jeff’s the man behind the curtain around here. He’s been in the real estate business nearly 40 years with a scope of work that includes large income producing properties, land development projects and debt & equity finance deals.

As the managing member of the “Old Au Sable” family of companies he oversees the day to day administrative operations.

He put the group together back in 2008 to both buy our property on the Au Sable River and to begin the operations of our fly fishing outfitting business.

His job is to do what's necessary to continue our growth path. He’s usually found in the office in front of his computer with a phone in his ear… he needs to fish a lot more.

His hobbies include fly fishing, flying (instrument rated private pilot), hunting and cooking.

He’s the proud father of 2 grown sons, Jason & Joshua who were both lucky enough to marry far above their pay grades. He’s also the grandfather of 2 incredible squirts (Mackenzie & Carson) who love to come Up-North and play in the river. He also owns the English Setter that often roams around the shop.

Al Borchers

Fly Fishing Guide - Pro Staff

Al was born and raised here in Grayling and literally grew up on the river.

He has deep roots in the fly fishing community, his Grandfather, Al Borchers, Sr. created the Borchers Special (he was also George Mason’s caretaker) and his Great Uncle, Ernie Borchers created the Borchers Drake.

An often heard question in the shop is – “if you could only have one fly what would it be”? The answer is always the same – a Borchers. It’s no wonder that Al starting fly fishing at the age of 6.

He built his own riverboat at 18 and began his guiding career, he’s now he’s one of the best guides on the Au Sable & Manistee Rivers. He excels at teaching his clients how to be better fly fishers.

For the last 10 years when late summer arrives Al heads to Alaska to guide at the Katmai & Mission Lodges.

As you might expect, Al’s a pro behind the vice too…no one ties a Borchers like a Borchers.

Other interests include White Tail hunting with both bow and rifle along with chasing upland game with his English Setter.

Linda Matas

Co-Owner — Bookkeeper & Lodging Manager

Linda is the hardest working woman we know.

She takes care of the Lodge and cabin rentals, keeps the books, pay the bills and the guides, cooks the chow for our events, cleans up after us all, and even after doing what amounts to 3 or 4 full time jobs, she never gets cross with us – ever. She often says how much she likes working with all men, probably because we’re polite, sensitive and caring.

All kidding aside though, this place would not function without Linda, she is a critical cog in the wheel here. So if you see her around the shop say hello and know she adores kids & dogs.

Linda likes to relax on the lake or river with her friends and family, spoiling the mini-kids Mackie & Carson as well as her English Setter Addis (above).

Al Borchers 1

Al DePolo

Co-Owner

Al’s our silent guy, at least for now. He continues to work as a physician in southeast Michigan as he has for over forty years. He’s also actively involved in the training of our future Urologists. He’s starting to see the retirement light at the end of the tunnel though, his plans are to spend a lot more time at his place on the river.

Al does a lot of things, all with passion. Fly fishing, fly tying, hunting, golfing, wood working, rod building, motorcycling and snowmobiling. He even works in his spare time (yea right) in law enforcement… he tends not to sleep much. It’s not unusual to get a text from him at 4 AM.

He’s very fortunate to be married to a very special gal. Carol tolerates his activities, at this point in the game we’re sure nothing surprises her. They have three kids Al, Nick, and Angie all with great spouses and two grandkids - Nate and Mia Grace.

Al’s always there for us, especially at our events. From donning his apron to serve BBQ at the opener party to performing an impromptu surgery at the shop for a hook or sliver removal.

Hopefully in the future Al will be around a bit more to help us all make the Old Au Sable experience as good as it can be.
