September 25 : Au Sable and Manistee River Report

Already the Brook Trout on the Au Sable River are beautifully colored up and staging for the spawn.  They are brightly suited with their orange and red bellies and white tipped fins.

The deer are thick and healthy. This year’s fawn’s spots have faded.  And the bucks have shed their light brown velvet and show bone white antlers.

PART_1411663418976_20140924_115827Then there’s the trees.  They are the penultimate symbols and champions of Fall.  Bright yellows, vibrant oranges, and deep reds are beginning to line the rivers and roads and settle into the deep woods.  It’s started now and will just get better.

The wet Summer means the trees are healthy and will hold on to their garish colors a little longer than in most years, so we should be able to enjoy the show more than in an average year.

That said, we’ve already had a couple of hard, tomato killing frosts and that makes the beautiful seventy degree weather forecast for the foreseeable future an Indian Summer.  It’s all happening about a week or so before normal. We’ve got color change happening right now in the middle of Northern Michigan and the colors should peak here during the first week of October.  I hear they’re already peaking in the Western U.P.

Color change on the trees nearest Michigan coastlines are running behind those in the center of Northern Michigan, so if you’d like to get a jump on an early color tour, stick to the roads that parallel the I-75 corridor and crossroads like M-72 out of Grayling, County Road 612 out of Frederic, or M-32 out of Gaylord.

This Weekend

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis is shaping up to be one of the most beautiful weeks of the year, so get outdoors and float down the Au Sable or Manistee and while you’re out there you may just as well get in a little fishing.  The Brook Trout have really turned on in the last few days on our local rivers and Salmon are pushing up rivers like the Betsie and Pere Marquette.

Remember the regular Trout season ends with the month of September, so many miles of trout stream will close for the year. We’ll keep fishing here, though.  All of our specially regulated waters are open year ‘round for catch and release fly fishing. You may just want to get one last outing to that favorite little Brook Trout stream of yours before it shuts down for the year.

Brook Trout fishing has been best during the heat of the day for the last couple . . . 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. has been best, but that may just shift with a steady string of 77 degree weather in the forecast.  We’ll see, but the one bite period may morph into two bite periods polarized toward morning and evening.  The days are shortening, so to be sure you don’t miss anything you may just have to fish from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. - dawn ‘til dusk!

Brown Trout

photo 1The Brown Trout fishing has been a bit slow this past week, but with the weather we’re having now, you may want to try an early morning strike with streamers large dries or streamers in an attempt to catch one of those bigger fish still out from a nighttime feeding foray.  That also means that you may just be able to get out there one last time for a midnight mousing trip.

Try to get out if you can; pretty soon it will all switch over to streamer fishing and you just won’t have all these options.  It’ll be great streamer fishing but . . .

River Clean Up Event

WP_20140920_010Lastly, I want to thank everyone that participated in the Manistee River Clean-Up.  We really threaded the needle on a thunderstorm and had great weather for entire event.

The Upper Manistee River Association, Anglers of the Au Sable, Mason-Griffith T.U., and us all chipped in repairing landings, cleaning the river, and planting trees.  Lots of great work got done and we left the river better than we found it.  A sincere thank you to all that joined in the effort.

Also, if you’re interested in a guided fishing trip and/or an upland bird hunt, give the shop a call.  We’d love to get you out there for one last fishing trip and we can set up cast and blast packages.

Take care and have fun out there,

Oh, and almost forgot, a special video look at our clean up:
