Saturday July 26th is the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon. On that Saturday, thousands of fans and canoe enthusiasts will gather around the gentle waters of the Au Sable and Manistee Rivers with great anticipation and excitement for the 67th annual marathon. It’s often been said that is you don’t like the weather in Northern Michigan than just wait, it’ll change. I love that about Michigan. We are a state of seasons. Whether you love or hate a particular season, it will pass into another either to your joy or sadness. However you feel about a particular change it is dynamic and keeps the year interesting. Every change, though sometimes bittersweet, ushers in a new experience and the front edge of a new experience is always exciting. -

We don’t need the weather man to tell us that this has been a cool, wet summer here in Northern Michigan. And while, that may be a bit of a disappointment to sun bathers and the fat guys ogling them, it’s promising to be a boon for summertime anglers. Much of the fishing opportunities that are normally gone with the passing of June are pushing nicely into the month of July. July 3 : Au Sable and Manistee River Report

The Hex hatch, and the angler’s quest to find big brown trout, continues throughout our region. Fishermen have been well satisfied on the Au Sable River (or should have been) and the hatch there has peaked on all reaches and is now just past prime. We’ll continue to have some good angling opportunities and we will have less traffic in the stretches with the thickest mud banks for the next ten days but the most consistent Hex fishing is behind us on the Au Sable.
